The Management committee hosted the 4th Conference on the 21st and 22nd October at Kempinksi hotel in Nairobi, Kenya.  The main thrust of this conference is to establish a platform for delegates to engage on the challenges and complexities that have arisen in the world of work as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic on the African Continent.

The theme of the conference was: Resilience, Recovery & Justice under the ‘New Normal’

The COVID-19 pandemic provided the backdrop for the deliberations of this Conference. The pandemic has had far-reaching impacts on all aspects of social, economic or political life. More than a year after the onset of the pandemic, it is evident that what seemed to be a “temporary inconvenience” has ushered in a “new normal”. The crisis has had a significant impact on the world of work. As countries continue to have to take measures to prevent the spread of the disease, an immediate return to ‘business as usual’ is unlikely. Employers and workers have had to modify different aspects of their work in response to the crisis. It is worth considering the labour and social protection interventions - both short and long term- that African countries have introduced to respond to the crisis. It is also worth considering the legal gaps and make recommendations for reforms required to align the laws with the realities.
